of Physiology
Physiology is one of the fundamental parts of Veterinary Medicine education. The Department of Physiology has been continuing its education and training activities since the 2011-2012 academic year when faculty started undergraduate education.
Physiology is a branch of science that examines the vital events and various functions in living organisms. In short, physiology is the science of life. Veterinary Physiology is the branch of science that examines the basics of physiological functions and behavioral physiology in various animal species comparatively.
Students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine joined
to the courses "Physiology I", "Physiology II", and
"Animal Behavior" in the first years of their education and receive
basic information about the body functions of animals and humans.
The courses are conducted theoretically and
practically. Physiology I and II courses include general physiology,
respiratory system, blood circulation, kidney functions, digestive and nervous
system, hormonal and reproductive systems, and general topics related to
thermoregulation and metabolism.
The theoretical subjects of the Ethology (Animal
Behavior) course cover the normal and abnormal behaviors of domestic animals.
Practical courses of physiology are conducted on domestic animals, laboratory
animals, and frogs in a way that will increase the knowledge that students have
received in the theoretical course. At the same time, courses such as
"Clinical Laboratory Diagnosis, Metabolic Physiology, Poultry Physiology,
Hematology, Exercise Physiology in Animals", Exotic and Ornamental Animals
Physiology" are also offered to our students as electives.
Our academicians also provide courses for supporting
to various vocational schools when necessary.
In addition to education and training activities,
research activities are also carried out within our department.
In the physiology research laboratories where
research activities are carried out, there are various equipment used in
staining, microscopic examination and analysis of cells.
In addition, introduction to physiology practice,
introduction of tools and equipment used in practice, general information about
laboratory use and bio-safety practices are taught to students.
The main fields of study of the Physiology
Department are veterinary hematology, cardiology, ECG, digestive physiology in
ruminants, hormonal system, protective effects of various organic and inorganic
substances in heavy metal toxicity on different laboratory animals, especially in
rats. In addition, many studies concerning the cardiovascular system in animals
have been carried out by our Department.
Education, training and research activities are
currently continuing with two researchers in our department.
